HORSESHOE
The Horseshoe Residence is a three-level rustic-contemporary house set in the woodsy enclave of Topanga. The existing rear-facing doors did not provide direct access to the property’s outdoor space. A new spiral stair connects the ground floor of the home to a new dining platform below. Existing exposed concrete footings were used to support the new dining platform as decorative walls.
Working closely with the client, an avid gardener, the design also makes use of a formerly unusable space under the main floor deck. This area is now a serene shade garden. This garden is focused around new poured-in-place concrete water features which allow the owner to control white- sound levels. The plant palette of primarily California native plants is punctuated by art objects from the owner’s sculpture collection.
